Nestor - Brain implants for vision restoration

Approximately 40m people worldwide are blind, leading to reduced workforce participation and many difficulties.

Approximately 40m people worldwide are blind, leading to reduced workforce participation and difficulties in navigation, reading, and face and emotion recognition, as well as impaired social interactions. In close collaboration with a leading neurotechnology company, Blackrock Neurotech, we designed and developed Nestor, a neuroprosthesis device which bypasses the eye and generates artificial images by interfacing directly with the brain. Crucially, this proof-of-concept demonstrated the clear potential of a visual cortical neuroprosthesis for restoration of functional, life-enhancing vision in the blind, and was recently published in Science.
