Biosensing
Quantity and quality in sensing the invisible
Thanks to the corona (self)-test, everyone knows what a biosensor is. Molecules in a sensor recognize other biological substances and produce a signal. Blood and urine tests are also done with biosensors, but they’re not only found in healthcare, they’re commonly used in industry, food production, or even in nature.
The Covid tests showed us that biosensors can be quick and small. What’s still missing is a quantitative result; not only knowing whether you have it, but for how long, at what stage, how mild or extreme etc. Add to this the so-called ‘function of time’: multiple measurements consecutively in a given time. A sensor that already does this is the glucose sensor that diabetics wear on their skin. TU/e researchers are currently working on developing quantitative biosensors with a function of time. It may not be long before we’ll all be wearing a biosensor which keeps a close eye on our health.
Moleculen in zo’n sensor herkennen andere biologische stoffen en zetten dat om in een signaal. Ook bloed- en urinetesten worden gedaan met biosensoren. Je kunt ze daarnaast inzetten buiten de gezondheids zorg, bijvoorbeeld in de industrie, voedselproductie of in de natuur.
Covid-tests bewijzen dat biosensoren heel snel en klein kunnen zijn. Wat nog ontbreekt, is een kwantitatieve uitslag; niet alleen weten óf je het hebt, maar ook hoe lang al, in welk stadium, hoe mild of extreem. En een zoge noemde ‘functie van tijd’: meerdere metingen achter elkaar in een bepaalde tijd. Een sensor die dat al doet, is de glucose sensor die diabetici op de huid dragen.
Onderzoekers van de TU/e werken aan de ontwikkeling van kwantita tieve biosensoren met een functie van tijd. Wie weet dragen we in de toekomst een biosensor op ons lichaam, waarmee we onze gezondheid goed in de gaten kunnen houden.
