Pioneering a zero emission Antarctica
Mars already has its Rover, now Antarctica will soon have its Polar Rover; a vehicle supporting sustainable, autonomous and low-cost research in Antarctica. Conducting research in inhospitable areas is relatively expensive, requires human labor, and is run on fossil fuels. In Antarctica, researchers drive around in (heated) vehicles with a full tank of kerosene, endangering their own safety. Team Polar’s vehicle can drive independently on solar energy without the need for people. The Polar Rover can continually do all kinds of research. These include mapping the continent and measuring climate change, by soil drilling, taking oxygen measurements, or analyzing the soil’s surface. We expect to have an Antarctic-resistant prototype ready for testing in 2024.
Mars heeft de Rover, Antarctica straks de Polar Rover; een voertuig dat het mogelijk maakt om duurzaam, autonoom en goedkoop onderzoek te doen op Antarctica. Nu is research doen in onherbergzame gebieden nog relatief duur, vraagt het mensenwerk en fossiele brandstoffen. Op Antarctica rijden onderzoekers rond in (verwarmde) voertuigen op kerosine, met gevaar voor hun eigen veiligheid en gebonden aan een volle tank. Het voertuig van Team Polar kan zelfstandig rondrijden op zonne-energie zonder dat daar mensen bij nodig zijn. Zo kun je het voertuig lange tijd allerlei onderzoek laten doen en het continent, en klimaatverandering, in kaart laten brengen. Denk aan locaties voor grondboringen, zuur stof metingen of analyse van het bodemoppervlak. Naar verwachting is er in 2024 een Antarctica-bestendig prototype van Polar, om mee te kunnen testen.
