Smart circular building
Could flax be the building material of the future? Well, we can build bridges using this natural material so that’s proof it really works. We’ve been using flax for thousands of years: in clothes, bags and ropes. In the TU/e Smart Circular Bridge project, we’re rediscovering this material and applying it to build three bridges, one of which can be seen at this year’s Floriade in Almere.
Combining flax with a bio-resin creates extremely strong tubes which can then be applied when building structures. There is still much to discover; that’s why the material now contains sensors that continuously monitor the bridge for any deflection and other changes. In this way, we’re gaining increasing knowledge and insights into this possible building material of the future.
Is vlas hét bouwmateriaal van de toekomst? Dat we ook bruggen kunnen maken van dit natuurlijke materiaal is in ieder geval een bewijs van dat het echt werkt.
We gebruiken vlas al duizenden jaren: in kleding, zakken en scheeps touwen. Binnen het TU/e-project Smart Circular Bridge herontdekken we dit materiaal en passen we het toe in drie bruggen, waarvan er dit jaar al één te zien is op de Floriade in Almere.
Door vlas te combineren met een biohars worden ook kokers gemaakt, die oersterk en toepasbaar zijn in bouwwerken. Er valt nog veel te ont dekken; daarom bevat het materiaal nu nog sensoren die de brug continu monitoren op eventuele buiging en andere veranderingen. Zo krijgen we steeds meer kennis en inzicht in dit mogelijke bouw materiaal van de toekomst.
