Sending a digital touch
A rubber hand for sending out a digital touch
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we can no longer hug our friends or family. A digital, or ‘mediated’, touch is a potential solution for such circumstances, when skin-to-skin contact is impossible. The prototype shown can give someone a stroke. We used it to investigate how people experience a mediated touch: what are the effects of the person sending the touch (romantic partner vs. stranger) and the input medium (touchpad vs. a rubber hand).
Door de COVID-19-pandemie kunnen we onze vrienden of familie niet meer knuffelen. Een digitale, of ‘gemedieerde’, aanraking is een mogelijke oplossing voor dit soort omstandigheden, waar huid-op-huid-contact onmogelijk is. Het getoonde prototype kan iemand een aai geven. Hiermee onderzoeken we hoe mensen een gemedieerde aanraking ervaren: wat is de invloed van de persoon die de aanraking stuurt (romantische partner vs. vreemdeling) en het invoermedium (touchpad vs. rubberen hand)?
